Here’s what’s going on in my world this week!
On the wndrby side of things:
For those who don’t know, I work with an arts integration non-profit that takes working artists and puts them in the classroom to create co-taught lessons with classroom teachers. The school I work with has been at a temporary campus due to renovations and today was my first time in the new building! It’s gorgeous, y’all. I kept thinking that I would have been SO excited to be able to go to a school like this when I was a kiddo and I can’t wait to see how the kids react to it.
Today I had a meeting with all of the teachers I’ll be working with this semester and i’ll working with one second grade class, the entire third grade class, and two sections of fifth grade. I’ll be teaching mostly science and social studies this semester with a little ELA on the side. Winter break was refreshing, but I’m so excited to get back into the classroom.
My plan is to post a weekly look into what I’m working on with the kiddos so you can see just how awesome these kids are. I love teaching arts-integrated lessons because it requires me to constantly create new and creative ways to engage the students and the different subjects they’re learning each week.
In addition to sneak peeks into the classroom, I’ll also be starting “Musical Mondays” next week! I put a poll on Laveau’s Instagram (@laveaucontraire) and 61% of y’all said you wanted Covers & Stuff vs 39% who said they wanted Mini Music Lessons. I’m not giving up on the mini music lesson idea, but I’m excited about working on weekly covers and sharing that with you.
On the Laveau side of things, I’m starting TWO new shows this week!
First up is Au Contraire! Au Contraire is a concept that I came up with in 2016 based on “Sardonyx Tonight” from one of my favorite shows “Steven Universe”! If you haven’t seen Steven Universe, PLEASE check it out. It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever watched and I can’t get enough. It tackles issues both light and deep in a way that’s easy for kids to understand and somehow manages to fit each episode into bite sized 10 minute chunks so it’s easy to binge. I have always identified with Sardonyx’s larger than life personality and boy, does she make a good host.
Sardonyx is described as “acting decidedly theatrical while also being able to keep up an intelligent conversation. Her demeanor is, for the most part, quite dramatic, as she prefers conversing with her peers in a matter similar to how a master of ceremonies would be to her audience, which fits her formal dress appearance. She seems to be snarky and witty, often laughs at her own jokes and remarks in a very pompous and comedic manner.”
She’s perfect right??? Anyways, back to Au Contraire.
I worked with The Letter Gii to create the original logo in the same style as “Sardonyx Tonight” featuring me doing my signature ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ pose with the name “Au Contraire” in lights behind me.
For the 2020 redux, I remixed Gii’s beautiful illustration by making the dress white and putting paint splatters on it to make it look ~artsy~
BECAUSE…..
This new edition of Au Contraire is all about artists! It’s a Tuesday night talk show where I’ll be interviewing creators of all art forms and discussing their creative process, the challenges they’ve faced, and how sharing their art has led to them living a more joyful life.
This week I’ll be joined by Alt-Pop musician sora (@soracalling) and discussing his musical inspirations and the struggles of being a pop musician in New Orleans. I’ll also be joined by Synamin Vixen, local burlesque performer and discussing what led her to burlesque, her herbal remedies, and how she uses her talents to help others.
